Buddhist economics musings

I teach an undergraduate seminar at UC Berkeley on “Buddhist Economics”, and it has been great fun. Recently it has attracted attention because of an article from  UCB. This has been wonderful because people from around the world have sent me their own ideas and work on economics, mindfulness, and sustainability. I would love to hear from you about making economics more relevant to our lives and more sustainable for our planet.

Ready to try interval training?

Lots of studies now show that you don’t have to exercise for very long, and long as you push it, and HIIT can improve your aerobic fitness more that longer less intense exercise.

Often called HIIT (high intensity interval training)—it definitely hits you.

Here are some HIIT routines from Women’s Health or from Huffington Post that can burn fat and get you fit!

OK,  it’s tough to do a workout of of 30- or 60-second intervals so strenuous you moan, followed by one to four minutes of  recovery, and repeat for total of four times (or intervals). But then you are DONE! Do this twice a week, and then let your third outing be a more leisurely and longer exercise routine.

Keep at it! Most people find that after a couple of weeks of HIIT, it becomes much easier and more fun. So stick with it for a few weeks before deciding if it’s for you.

Still not convinced? Here are the latest scientific studies: one from Canada and one from Norway.

Use of antibiotics can make you fat!

Big Agriculture has been feeding antibiotics to chickens and livestock since the 1950s as a cheap way to fatten them up. The antibiotic superfood allowed the animals to subsist in filthy conditions, and the stage was set for factory farming.

Now scientists are concerned that the high use of antibiotics, especially by children, is a factor in the huge increase in obesity. These wonder drugs may have made us fatter, just like livestock.

A New York Times piece states, “New evidence shows that America’s obesity epidemic may be connected to our high consumption of these drugs.”

One more reason to reduce our use of antibiotics in people, as well as animals!

Make sure that any antibiotics you take are to treat a bacterial infection. Don’t take antibiotics “just in case”.  Also ask if any other treatment is available. If the infection is a UTI, you might check out SuperMannan.
